As Barbadians continue to prepare and brace for the passing of unpredictable Atlantic weather systems, the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) continues to plan, train and coordinate.

This ensures the capability and capacity to assist interagency partners in responding to any worst-case scenarios which may emanate.

The Force has a multidimensional role in local and regional disaster response. The training and preparation of the BDF were recently tested during the passage of Tropical Storm Kirk (TS Kirk). The BDF rescued 15 persons (including a pregnant lady, 2 children and 3 senior citizens). BDF personnel also conducted damage assessment, reconnaissance tasks and debris clearances.

Discipline, Honest and Integrity, Loyalty, Determination, Courage, Respect for Self and Others; these are the core values of the Barbados Defence Force and formed the bedrock of the Chief of Staff, Col Glyne Grannum’s address to the 53 Regular and Reserve recruits who passed out from training on Saturday 6 October 2018.

The Pass Out Parade and Sunset Ceremony was the climax of 21 weeks of arduous training for the recruits and marked their point of transition into the ranks of the Barbados Defence Force. The Parade was held at the St Ann’s Fort the Garrison Saturday 6 October 2018, to an appreciative audience of family and friends and receptive Command and Enlisted ranks.

The BDF All Arms Advanced Drill and Ceremonial Course 1/18  culminated with a Parade and Sunset Ceremony, at St Ann’s Fort the Garrison, in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bridgetown and its Historic Garrison, on Friday 5 October 2018.

Participants were from: the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, the Barbados Defence Force, the Royal Barbados Police Force, the Barbados Prison Service, the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force, the Royal Grenada Police Force, the Jamaica Defence Force and the Royal St Lucia Police Force.

The Chief of Staff Barbados Defence Force, Colonel Glyne Grannum, was the parade’s Reviewing Officer.  In his feature remarks, he reminded the successful students of the inseparability of drill, leadership and teamwork. This he argues was necessary because, “Our careers in the protective services require us to go into inconvenient, uncomfortable and at times dangerous spaces and places for the betterment of those we serve and protect.  As the security environment continues to evolve those there will be ample time, space and places where we will be called into action.  The opportunity you all now have, is that as a Drill Course Graduate and leader, we must always see and identify the circumstances to apply your knowledge (directly or indirectly) to make a difference through leadership.”

Members of the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) today began a five-month assignment at the Geriatric Hospital, Beckles Road, St. Michael, which will significantly upgrade the physical conditions for the 286 residents.

Hospital Manager, Heather Payne-Drakes, said that the BDF’s involvement in the project was facilitated by Minister of Health and Wellness, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic, who is a former member of the BDF.

Mrs. Payne-Drakes welcomed “the fantastic partnership” between the hospital and the BDF, noting: “As you can see, the facility is quite dated. Right now we have some leakage, some windows that are out and some doors that are not functioning. We expect that at the end of the renovations the entire ambiance of the hospital will be transformed.

“We expect that it will be a lot more pleasant for the patients and staff; the colours will be changed and we will not have those environmental issues that accompany the deterioration of the plant,” she said.

Mrs. Payne-Drakes disclosed that to facilitate the work, some patients have had to be relocated to other sections of the hospital. She advised family and friends wishing to visit to contact the Nursing Administration Unit at 228-2597 so that they could be directed to the appropriate ward.

Major Lubin Maxwell, the BDF’s Building Rehabilitation Project Manager, is in charge of the work on site. He said his team of 18, including masons, plumbers, electricians, painters and general workers, was working with a team of artisans from the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

“The scope of work is to renovate and rehabilitate the wards, both internally and externally, with work on each block scheduled to last 20 weeks.”

Major Maxwell said that while the BDF officers would take a break to facilitate their involvement in the upcoming Remembrance Day and Independence Day Parades, the work will continue during that period with the artisans from the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

He said that the BDF officers were very appreciative of the contribution made to Barbados in the past by the elderly population and were honoured to be part of a project to improve their quality of life.

United States Ambassador Taglialatela visited the Regional Security System firing range where a Mobile Training Team of eight Marines from Marine Forces-South conducted a ten- day marksmanship instruction course for 45 participants from Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

The event familiarized security force personnel with the Marine Corps program of instruction on rifle marksmanship, built on existing weapons proficiency skills, and exposed them to techniques and procedures used as best-practices for the safe and effective employment of the M16/M4 rifle. Each participant received a combination of classroom instruction, dry-fire drills, and live-fire range instruction.

The training provided an opportunity for police and military members from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines to work together in a training environment where they not only benefited from instruction but the exposure to a range of skills and experiences. The event demonstrates United States’ enduring commitment to its Caribbean partners in advancing regional security.
