The Barbados Defence Force formally named and brought into service a new 958Y inshore vessel today at the Barbados Coast Guard’s HMBS PELICAN. The vessel named ENDURANCE is part of the military equipment package donated by the People’s Republic of China.
The vessel joins three others in the inshore patrol class fleet of vessels – ENDEAVOUR, ENTERPRISE and EXCELLENCE and therein boosts the Barbados Coast Guard’s capacity to conduct maritime law enforcement operations, provide safety at sea, counter maritime security threats and protect the island’s blue economy and offshore interests.
In addition to meeting the threats, it is important to bear in mind that the BDF is indeed a partner in securing the many opportunities that our 183,436 Square Kilometer space of ocean treasures, over 420 times the size of the terrestrial land mass, present for us and future generations.

Prime Minister, the Hon Mia Amor Mottley officially christening the Endurance as Minister MABE Hon Kirk Humphrey, COS BDF Col Glyne Grannum, ADC to the Prime Minister Capt Gale Morgan and Slt Sena Price look on.
Chief of Staff, Col Grannum reminded the audience that, these treasures are a part of the global maritime economy, estimated to be worth in excess of 3 trillion US dollars, and include sub-sectors such as maritime and coastal tourism; the offshore oil and gas industry; offshore wind-power generation and water transportation. Being only 5 percent of the overall global GDP, there is an opportunity for Barbados to better capitalize on what our oceans have to offer and what the BDF by duty must help to protect.
The Barbados Defence Force is cognizant that in order for Barbados to exploit its maritime treasures and blue economy maximally that the Force must partner with a wide community of stakeholders across the Public and Private sectors, individual citizens, visitors to the island, Regional and international States and organisations. The attendance of all our guests here at HMBS PELICAN this evening is a demonstration of our unshakeable commitment to continue to play our role for the betterment of our beloved Barbados.
